PYP Unit - Sharing the Planet start in December The lines of inquiry for this first science unit will be: 1. How resources are obtained and distributed 2. Ways in which individuals and organizations work to protect children 3. How children respond to chalenges, risks, and opportunities
Science curriculum will hope to cover the following concepts in a 6 week period: Solar systen - sun, planets, length of day, Moon phases, constrllations, scale models, inner and outer planets Weather - sun's angle, insolation, layers of the atmosphere, air pressure, weather Vapor and Humidity - Condensation, transpiration, evaporation, precipitation, warm and cook air, cloud formation, types of clouds, floods Air pressure and Wind - coriolis, wind patterns, isobars, weather Gravity - laws of motion
Sansu Math This year the 5th graders will be working with a Japanese math series that focuses on problem solving skills. The problems in the series have been developed through a process called "Lesson Study". Thanks to Ms. Zaimi, Peirce teachers are fortunate to participate in this research process. Math and science are my passion and I am very excited to have students work with Sansu Math. In our first chapter we will investigate the structure of numbers through working with whole numbers and decimal numbers. “Sansu Math is an adaptation of the Tokyo Shoseki series New Mathematics, Japan’s most widely used elementary mathematics series. Sansu Math maintains the depth and coherence of the original Japanese curriculum and the Japanese Ministry of Education’s Course of Study, while providing supplementary topics, such as money and measurement, for educators in the United States. Sansu Math focuses on a selective number of topics, teaching each in depth through carefully sequenced lessons that build on each other. The relatively slow pacing allows students to truly master content and develop important mathematical practices. These textbooks and teacher’s guides encourage students to learn through problem solving. Students using this Japan math program engage in mathematical discussions, strengthen conceptual understanding of content, and develop reasoning skills."
Social Emotional Learning: "Second Step is a program rooted in social-emotional learning (SEL) that helps transform schools into supportive, successful learning environments uniquely equipped to encourage children to thrive. More than just a classroom curriculum, Second Step’s holistic approach helps create a more empathetic society by providing education professionals, families, and the larger community with tools to enable them to take an active role in the social-emotional growth and safety of today’s children. It’s a difference you can feel the moment you step through the doors to a Second Step school: a sense of safety and respect grounded in the social-emotional health and well-being of the entire school community."
